Most of the attention on drones around the NFL Championship Game in Atlanta has been focused on the dozen or so drone operators snagged by the FBI for illegally flying ahead of the big game. But drones were also being used to help secure the very same event.

"We do work in film and T.V.," he said. "We do live broadcasting for news." Parker is a licensed commercial drone pilot. "As someone who wants to do this correctly and legally, seeing people do things somewhat rogue and against the rules and, uh, dangerous - it's frowned upon," he said.

To help win their war against wildfires, state and federal departments are turning to drone missions for reconnaissance and data gathering. The California Air National Guard, for example, is using a military grade UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), called the MQ-9 Reaper, at both the Mendocino Complex and Carr fires. The drone captures live video of the blaze from 20,000 feet and can stay in the air for hours, identifying where the fire is spreading.

With the help of Skyfire Consulting, The Georgetown Police Department (GPD) in Kentucky has been using drones to find missing persons, locate stolen vehicles and suspects fleeing from crime scenes, and document infrastructural failures. According to News-Graphic, the primary motivation to purchase the aerial equipment was a sharp rise in vehicle break-ins, and an urge to stay in lockstep with practical technological innovation.

Skyfire Consulting, a public safety drone consulting company, has teamed up with Sporty’s Pilot Shop to develop a drone Christmas tree ornament. Made from hard resin, Skyfire’s drone ornament is modeled after a consumer-style drone.

Matt Sloane calls the Matrice 210 a “game-changer for drones in public safety.” It has dual daylight cameras and a thermal imaging camera. It also has an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast In (ADS-B In) transponder system so it can receive signals from aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out (mandated for all aircraft by January 2020).

The second annual Skyfire Conference for public safety drone operators will be kicking off in Burnet, Texas on February 28, 2018. The conference, focused on training firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders to use drone technology, is turning up the heat for its second year, doing a live-fire burn to demonstrate best practices for fire response.
