The UAV, an Inspire 1 model manufactured by SZ DJI Technology Company was purchased with a recent $10,000 gift from RESCUE ONE Foundation. The drone was outfitted with two swap-out upgrades: a high-resolution camera and a FLIR infrared camera. The drone can carry a payload of two pounds, making it capable of ferrying a small first aid kit or portable radio to a victim who can't be reached from the ground.

The Matrice 200 flagship model, available right now, is single-camera, dual-battery, and IP43 weather resistant. The battery system is fully enclosed, which means heat from the battery will help keep the drone warm, and improves performance in cold weather. The drone flies for up to 40 minutes, and also has an on-board FPV camera, for looking forward to see where the drone is facing.

On November 29, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) released their 2400 Standard for Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) used for Public Safety Operations. The three-in-one standard, a first for NFPA, includes a section on creating and operating a drone program, professional qualifications and job performance requirements for pilots and visual observers; and a section on drone maintenance and reporting.

As part of the session titled Counter Ambush: Care Under Fire, the use of drones for surveillance, tracking and delivery of materials was addressed.

Skyfire Consulting, a safety-focused drone company, recently gained the FAA’s sign-off on the Los Angeles Fire Department’s in-house UAV program. LAFD, one of the US busiest fire/rescue agencies, put their trust in the company, based on their proven track record of success with FAA filings in the public safety space.
