“We don’t have to go all the way back to 9/11… We know we’re a prime target.” - Chief John Esposito during an FDNY counterterrorism drill

 PUBLIC SAFETY MINUTE

FDNY used drone in dual terror attack drill

Two terror attacks just hit New York City at the same time -- now what?! That’s what the FDNY Special Operations Command Task Force practiced last week during a counterterrorism drill with simultaneous exercises: One simulated a bomb blasting apart a boat full of folks on Jamaica Bay while the other simulated an explosion in a Brooklyn commuter tunnel during rush hour. And you know what’s a great tool for a dark, smoke-filled tunnel?

The Flyability Elios.

We were so honored to be there with our pilots, showing off the possibilities of this technology in the environment where it was built to fly! We know how hard you train to keep us safe -- and for that, we thank you!

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. FDNY Special Operations Command Task Force drill simulated two simultaneous terror attacks.

  2. Skyfire was there with our pilots to help show off the Flyability Elios.

  3. The Elios is designed for flying inside inaccessible places -- like a tunnel, for example. Call us if you want to know more about this tech! We’d be happy to show it to ya.

Why should you care?

When you sign on with Skyfire, you’re joining the family. We don’t just drop the equipment, write a COA and run. We roll up our sleeves and get in the trenches - or tunnels - to make sure we’re using our technology in every way we can so everyone comes home safe.

SHAMELESS PLUG

We’ll set it on fire -- you do all the flying!

RADIOACTIVE

Drone surveys Chernobyl -- please don’t go there, K?

  • Any Propellerheads actually old enough to remember the meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant? Some of us over here at Skyfire HQ were -- let’s just say -- a little young at the time (or not even born yet -- yeah we’re looking at you, INTERNS!). We’ve been hooked on HBO’s new Chernobyl miniseries. It’s a fascinating look at their response to the meltdown (even if they take some dramatic liberties). Now we’re all getting a new view of the area’s radioactive hot spots -- brought to you 33 years later, by drone (of course!).

Here’s what you need to know:

    1. Researchers from the University of Bristol mapped out 5.8 square miles of Chernobyl's exclusion zone -- in 3D!

    2. They uncovered surprising radioactive hotspots using the pulsed laser system known as LIDAR along with a lightweight gamma-ray spectrometer.

    3. Ukrainian authorities say it could be tens of thousands of years (holy crap!) before nearby settlements are safe for humans again.

    Why should you care?

Because you’re booking your summer travel plans right now and you need to know that Chernobyl is definitely not an option this year, sorry! And yes people do visit each year -- about 70,000 tourists enter the area with the help of a specially trained guide.

A shoutout to our buddy Sam Proffitt, a paramedic firefighter in Wrightsville Beach, NC! He’s out there teaching folks how to use their drones responsibility through their “Civilian Drone Academy.” This is what we love to see -- everyone working together to make our skies safer!
